Goodwood Festival of Speed - 9-12th July

The Cartier Style et Luxe is a unique concours in being judged by suite of creatives, from the worlds of art, music, fashion, design and drama, and so it was no surprise that the ex-Philip Barry/ Charles Addams/ John Calley Mercedes-Benz 680 S recieved so much attention.

Among a tough class, celebrating the centenary of the Daimler-Benz merger and the Mercedes-Benz brand name that resulted, the class judges - actors Stanley Tucci and David Jonsson - were particularly taken by the 680 S.

Elsewhere at Goodwood, Gregor was honoured to drive Porsche 962 chassis 010 in the reunion with its old 1988 Le Mans sparring partner. With a theme of celebrating great motorsport rivalries, 962 010 was joined on the hill climb by the Silk Cut Jaguar XJR-9 which pipped it to overall victory at the legendary 24 Hour race.

The Porsche had been destined to win, having claimed pole position by three second and leading comfortably out front until Klaus Ludwig missed his fuel stop signal and ran the tanks dry... ironically at the Porsche curves. Ludwig managed to get the stricken Porsche back to the pits on the starter motor, but lost two laps from the lead, and with teammates Stuck and Bell set about a huge redemption drive. Finishing second was little comfort to Derek Bell, who was also reunited with 962 010 over the weekend and confirms 1988's race is still the 'one that got away'.
