History has proven that the Daytona would be a fiercely competitive challenger in endurance racing, much against the initial thoughts of Maranello. Powered by the newly bored out Columbo V12, Chassis 15685 is the 10thof 15thCompetizione Daytonas completed by the factory. Benefitting from a 400 pound weight reduction, the performance of the Daytona went from strength to strength.
15685 had an unusual warm-up prior for the 1972 Le Mans 24 hours. Vanishing after practice, sporting number ‘74’, Chinetti would soon learn his son had taken the Ferrari to visit a girlfriend in a nearby town! Clearly all the better for the nights antics, N.A.R.T team drivers Posey and Adamowicz finished second in class, and sixth overall.
A 1stin class victory was to follow at 6 hours of Watkins Glen, in the hands of Jean-Pierre Jarier and Gregg Young. Following use as a road car by then custodian Ken Starbird, this spectacular Daytona Competizione would not only prove fiercely competitive on track, but was awarded 1stin class at Pebble Beach Concours in 1974. Ken then entered 15685 in the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1976. The only Ferrari entered against more modern competition, and starting at the back of the grid, the long range battle favoured the Daytona, and half-way in, the Ferrari was already eighth, and takes an outstanding 6thoverall.
Later owner, Ferrari collector Jean-Pierre Slavic would enter 15685 in various 90s races, including the GP de Montreux and Tour Auto. After the somewhat quieter years that would follow, the Daytona found competition again in the custodianship of renowned French racer, Olivier Cazalieres. Finishing 1stto 3rdin class during numerous races, and with a 1stoverall at the Ferrari Maserati Historic Challenge at Pau, 2005 it would be an understatement to suggest that 15685 is anything less than one of the most capable Group 4 Daytonas offered for sale publicly in recent years.
