Well-established as a season opener, classic motoring enthusiasts recognise Salon Rétromobile in Paris as the go-to European show of its kind. Fiskens cross the Channel annually to present their latest consignments to the motoring cognoscenti. This year, examples range in age and character from an early 1894 Peugeot racer to a 1975 Lamborghini LP400 Countach 'Periscopica'.
Unveiled earlier today, the Fiskens collection (Stand 063 in Pavilion 1) did not fail to disappoint with the hand-curated display garnering significant levels of interest from collectors, the motoring media and enthusiasts alike. The motor sport laurels represented within the collection are momentous, with important period contenders from Le Mans, the Paris-Rouen, Mille Miglia, Monaco Grand Prix, and the Tour de France all on offer.
A highlight of the ensemble must be the very rare and coveted 1931 Alfa Romeo 8C Spider by Zagato, driven by both Enzo Ferrari and racing legend Tazio Nuvolari in period. One of the first ‘Corto’ Spiders, the 8C was a leading contender at motor sport events as diverse at the Belgium Grand Prix and the Coppa Ciano, not to mention the Mille Miglia. Widely recognised as one of the most important examples of its type, this supercharged straight eight pushed performance to another league. '2111006' offers impeccable ownership pedigree throughout its life to date and is an extraordinarily rare opportunity to own one of the greatest automobiles of all time.
The 8C Spider is perfectly complemented on the Fiskens stand by other great sports racing cars of different eras. The mid thirties is ably covered by the mighty 1934 Talbot AYL 2, the famous Alpine bodied Dr Roth car with its extensive Brooklands history; the fifties is represented by a 1952 DB3 Aston Martin, one of only ten built and with an extensive period race history, including the British Grand Prix Sports Car race at Silverstone and the Tourist Trophy Race on the Isle of Man and the stylish 1959 Lister Costin Chevrolet, which was the first Costin-bodied Lister to be powered by Chevrolet with period Goodwood history. Other sports racing gems offered at the show include a 1894 Peugeot Type 5, believed to be the eleventh placed finisher in the 1894 Paris-Rouen, recognised globally as ‘the world’s first motor race’ and an exceptionally rare 1963 Porsche T6B 356 Carrera 2GT, Tour de France entrant and winner of the 12 Heures de Huy.
For single seater devotees, the United States Grand Prix-winning 1978 Ferrari 312 T-3, driven by both Carlos Reutemann and Gilles Villeneuve, is a veritable slice of Formula One History. Having claimed the highly prized pole position at the 1978 Monaco Grand Prix, this Ferrari has been a striking sight at the Monaco Historique in recent years.
However, whilst competition cars are a hallmark of Fiskens, the company also specialises in the very best road-going sports cars. Two such extremely prominent exhibits are a 1932 Bugatti Type 55 and a 1930 Bentley Speed Six. The Bugatti, first introduced at the Paris Salon in 1931 and generally acknowledged as the best Bugatti road car ever built, is bodied in unique Billeter & Cartier coachwork, as its first owner, a Doctor Kocher, insisted on additional legroom. The 1930 Bentley Speed Six; a model which WO Bentley declared in period as ‘his favourite car’, is exceptionally original and boasts English aristocracy amongst its previous owners.
Moving forwards a 1962 Maserati 3500 GT Vignale Spyder represents all that is revered about Italian style. This full matching numbers example is fitted with the rare hard top. The Porsche 356 Carrera 2 GS, produced just one year later, is widely acknowledged to be a thinly veiled race car and this unrivalled performance, coupled with being the most sophisticated and developed of the 356-based Carreras, has resulted in the 2 GS becoming arguably the most coveted of the historic Porsche road cars. From Italy, to Germany and finally to Great Britain, the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Coupé, famous the world over as the trusty stead of 007 James Bond, was specially commissioned for the 1965 Barcelona Motor Show and was built to an exclusive specification.
Last but by no means least, the jaw-dropping lines of the 1975 Lamborghini LP400 Countach 'Periscopica' is the stuff of childhood dreams. Previously owned by a member of the Saudi royal family, this example boasts extremely low mileage and original ‘Giallo Flay’ paintwork and is sure to be coveted by collectors from both automotive and design worlds.
